Nebraska is also the motherland of the Oregon Trail. More than 428 miles of the original Oregon Trail passed through the flat grasslands of Nebraska before it turned northwestwards. Today, most of the old routes are easily accessible, with historic markers guiding travelers on I-80, along the Platte River, or Route 92, which follows the trail's northwestern ascent of the North Platte.
Chadron is the ideal base to tour the Pine Ridge and Sandhills regions as well as explore the aspects of the state's fascinating past. About 3 miles east of town is the Museum of Fur Trade. The museum traces the history of the complex North American fur trade and its effect on Native American communities. One of its main features is a reconstructed trading post built into the sides of a low hill.
State capital and Nebraska's second-largest city, Lincoln is also home to the University of Nebraska, whose Cornhuskers football team is so popular is has sold out every home game at the 77,000 seat Memorial Stadium since 1962.
